Gain Weight The Healthy Way


For most people whose main goal is to LOSE weight, the idea of not being able to get enough calories in seems like a non-problem to say the least! But, when you're working to build muscle and bulk up, gaining healthy weight can be a lot harder than it seems.

What is bulking?
Bulking and cutting are two cycles that people who are serious about strength training rotate through to hit their goals. Simply put, bulking is living every day with a calorie excess to gain weight while cutting helps to lose weight at a calorie deficiency.

Why gain weight? Your body cannot build muscle out of nothing and, as much as we would like to be able to carve it out of air, you need plenty of fuel to get that nice, shredded look. Because it's more efficient to bulk hard and then shed the excess fat afterwards, most bodybuilders go through a cutting cycle to lower their body fat percentage and achieve their desired look.

Dirty Bulking vs. Clean Bulking
There are two different methods often disputed when it comes to making serious muscle gains through a bulk. Clean bulking is the idea of eating nothing but healthy foods - like you would on a cut - but to an excess while someone on a dirty bulk would include junk food, fast food and anything they could to push their calorie count higher.

Clean bulking is an obvious winner in terms of maintaining good health, but junk food does have its place. Hitting 3000+ calories when you're of a larger stature can be difficult with just nuts and eggs, but don't overdo it. Make sure you include plenty of whole-grain breads, pastas, meats and vegetables into your diet either way to hit those targets. Choosing between the two methods really comes down to personal preference - you can always use a mass gainer to make your quota if you want to avoid cheeseburgers.

Eat More and Eat More Times a Day
Six meals a day. Simple. Plan them into your schedule and make sure they are spaced apart evenly. Wake up at 2am and down a protein shake. Eating more frequently keeps your metabolism up and helps you gain muscle faster.

Throw Cardio Out the Window
Keen runners, joggers, skippers beware! Cardio makes it harder for you to build mass. Don't forgo it altogether, but if you really want to make some serious progress then you're going to limit the amount you do. The more you run the more calories you burn without building new muscle.

Get to the weight you want and see your strength improve dramatically by following a few of these tips. Bodybuilding might be about results, but bulking should be at least a little bit of fun for you. Stay healthy but enjoy it before you cut later to get the definition and tone that you want.
