If I Quit Smoking Will I Gain Weight?

If we took a poll of smokers who want to quit and asked them their reasons for not quitting, here are the top answers:

I don't want to gain weight
I am too stressed - I need the stress relief
I have tried before, and I couldn't, I can't
My partner smokes so what is the point
All my friends smoke
I have for so long already what is the point now
Cigarettes alter a person's reward circuitry, as addictive drugs do. Rapid rushes of dopamine dictate the pleasure a person seeks.

Smoking as a stay thin strategy: Yes, smoking is a metabolic booster, for a number of reasons, however the main reason is the same reason why smoking is so deadly to the heart. Smoking speeds the heart rate tremendously, nicotine is a metabolic booster. It is thought that smoking 20 cigarettes a day is comparable to an extra 90 pounds of body weight as a stress to the heart.

Think of aging - no face creams, anti wrinkle creams can hide the nasty smokers' wrinkled leathered skin - truthfully I call it the Lacoste look. Not to mention the hacking cough, infusing loved ones with carcinogens from our second hand & third hand smoke... Its worth the effort to use a skillful quit plan, that we can minimize, and hopefully eliminate our fears.

There are studies that show people who stop smoking before 40. A recent study from the University of Toronto suggests people who stop smoking before the age of 40 can potentially add back some of the years they were taking off their life - in other words potential of recovery from some of the smoke related death risks, comorbidities, are increased, if women stop smoking before the age of 40. Yes they still have a higher death risk than women who never smoked - but the risks are cut.

It might sound silly, but people often ignore the most important part of a quit smoke program - figuring out the why, where, when... all the details of their smoking pattern. To say straight nicotine addiction - isn't enough. A smoking cessation program must be customized & adjusted to the unique set of variables for each person.

What is more than usual - is the smoking rarely is the only health saboteur to address - again smoking is often a manifestation of other issues smoldering in the background. This is why people who seek counseling for smoking cessation have far higher success rates than those who quit on their own. Even when using NRT - Nicotine Replacement therapy - yes the nicotine addiction is dealt with - however - it does not deal with the other variables involved in the smoking habit - therefore, long term success rates are not as good.

So the honest answer to the original question: Don't let anybody make you flashy promises - because promising no weight gain is like promising 6 weeks to a bikini body. However, by addressing the issues mentioned above, yes there are some others as well, we can minimize the possibility, open up your life to a health centric lifestyle, and as time goes on, equalize the metabolism back to happy homeostasis!
